I-CORE was represented at Tel Aviv University’s Sagol School of Neuroscience First Retreat, which took place over three days at Maale Ha’hamisha outside of Jerusalem from April 9-11, 2014. I-CORE Gene Regulation in Complex Human Disease members Karen Avraham and Noam Shomron took part in the retreat, as well as members Yuval Nir, Roy Mukamel, Talma Hendler and Galit Yovel from the I-CORE in Cognitive Sciences, The Reconstructive Mind: From Percept to Memory and Back. Prof. Avraham presented her research on topics currently being studied in her laboratory including transcriptomics and proteomics of the auditory and vestibular systems, deep sequencing for gene discovery, microRNA and lincRNA discovery and characterization and epigenetics of the auditory system during development. Dr. Shomron presented the studies carried out by his team that focuses on using deep sequencing to decipher human diseases. In his talk he mentioned a few brain disorders they investigate, including major depression and schizophrenia. The research described at the retreat was inspiring, ranging from therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease to sleep and its relation to cognition and neuroeconomics and decision making. Oral and poster presentations from 45 faculty and 150 student scientists contributed to making the retreat a huge success and helped foster scientific interactions and collaborations in brain research and associated diseases.
