I-CORE was represented at the ILANIT Congress that took place in Eilat February 10-13, 2014. ILANIT is a federation of all Israeli societies of experimental biology. These 28 societies cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, with their main activity of an annual meeting each year. ILANIT’s conference is held every three years in Eilat, with attendance by researchers and students. This conference is the culmination of the most exciting research performed in Israel in many disciplines. This year, over 2000 faculty and students from all over Israel participated in the Congress. Forty-six parallel lecture sessions, 19 parallel oral poster sessions and two evening poster sessions provided the scientific content of the Congress. The sessions covered the following areas: genetics, genomics & systems biology, structural biology, signaling, biochemistry, ecology, zoology, plant biology and biotechnology, immunology, virology and microbiology, physiology, cell biology, bio(nano)engineering, stem cells, developmental biology and neurobiology and molecular medicine and cancer biology.

Early Bird sessions raised questions such as “Should Biology be taught in high school?” and “Life after graduate school,” and “Emerging high-bandwidth technologies in biomedical research.” Other sessions included “Threats on life and health sciences research in Israel.”

I-CORE sponsored the plenary lecture of Prof. Arieh Warshel, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2013 for “the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems.” Other plenary speakers from abroad included Hao Wu, Michael Karin, David Bartel and Hans Clevers. Forty-six post-doctoral fellows from abroad searching for faculty positions in Israel were provided travel fellowships to attend Ilanit. A meeting was coordinated for the post docs with leaders of academia in Israel.
