I-CORE for Gene Regulation in Complex Human Disease hosted Prof. Lee Hood, founder and president of the Institute for Systems Biology

I-CORE for Gene Regulation in Complex Human Disease hosted Prof. Lee Hood, founder and president of the Institute for Systems Biology, and recipient of the 2013 US National Medal of Science. Prof. Hood spoke to a packed audience about “A Systems Approach to Disease: Systems Medicine is Transforming Healthcare.”

Prof. Lee Hood spoke at Tel Aviv University on June 20, 2013, while he was in Israel to attend the “Facing Tomorrow” Presidential Conference. Dr. Hood presented his pioneering work, beginning with engineering and DNA research at Caltech, to the founding and establishment of the Institute for Systems Biology. Dr. Hood was a key player in the Human Genome Project and also played a pioneering role in deciphering the secrets of antibody diversity. In his lecture, Dr. Hood presented a variety of projects taking place in the Institute for Systems Biology, among them brain and neurology research, as well as work on neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Hood has received many awards, including the Lasker Award for Studies of Immune Diversity, the Kyoto Prize in advanced technology, the Heinz Award for pioneering work in Systems Biology, and the NAE 2011 Fritz J. and Delores H. Russ Prize for automating DNA sequencing that revolutionized biomedicine and forensic science. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. The Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics co-sponsored the event.
